Thank you: Oprah, Local Media, and Hinche Scholars Donors – We Still Need Your Help!

November 20, 2010

Thank You Oprah!!!

Some of you might have caught a glimpse of Danny Yates and Ken Henshaw who had the great honor of participating in the audience of yesterday’s airing of Oprah’s Favorite Things. On behalf of the I Have a Dream Foundation and the Hinche Scholars Project, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Oprah Winfrey Show and Ms. Winfrey herself for the generous gifts we received.

Initially, we embarked on the trip to Chicago under the impression that we would be discussing our project with Oprah. Instead, we and other audience members (many of whom are involved with charitable efforts as well) were showered with gifts.

Many of these items, including Oprah’s own signature Philip Stein diamond watch (pictured below), a 52-inch flat screen 3-D/HD/Sony TV & blu-ray player, a cashmere sweater, and many more of “Oprah’s Favorite Things” are available for purchase. We are auctioning these items on ebay and the profits will be used twoard our scholarship fund for the students, – so be sure to follow this link: http://myworld.ebay.com/hinche_scholars/.

We are truly indebted to the many local news agencies – both in Richmond and in Hampton Roads which afforded us great publicity. Several of these stories and videos can be accessed via the links below.

Thanks also to John Ogle of WCVE Public Radio and Bill Bevins of Lite 98- both of whom are longtime supporters of our effort.

Today, Professor Ken Simmons and Professor Judith Cowan return to North Carolina after a month in Charlotte.  These two Barber-Scotia Professors taught the Hinche Scholars as part of an ESL intensive course from 8am-5pm each day for four weeks. Below are a few new pictures taken by David Smith.

The Lord works in mysterious ways. I believe the invitation before a national audience is a mere glimpse of what is in store for the Hinche Scholars Project. Be encouraged, the best is yet to come.
