Sad News

April 7, 2010

I just received the following peice of terrible news. In previous posts, I’ve used pictures and spoken of young Jean Roselande, and those of you who have visited Sacre Coeur may know her personally.

Roselande (at right), smiling in this January 2010 picture, with her adopted brother Emmanuel (at left).

Roseland lived at Sacre Coeur and she was the young adopted daughter of Melia (Madame Prince’s sister). Roselande had HIV, but she was faring quite well up until last week. In fact, in January when we spent 2 weeks in Hinche, she looked to be in great spirits and health. Unfortunately, her weakend immune system succumbed to the seasonal flu yesterday when she died at St. Therese Hosptial. Roseland was a beautiful, intelligent, and engaging 12-year-old who was a student at St. Martin’s High School. Father Etienne will be saying her funeral mass tomorrow. Please keep Roseland, her family, and the entire Sacre Coeur community in your prayers.

When I asked Father Bourdeau what we could do to help with this tragic news, he told me that he wants any donations to be given in Roseland’s memory to the university student project. Roseland, who was a favorite “younger sister” of Suze, Samuel, and FanFan Prince, was very excited when she learned that her “siblings” would be coming to the U.S. to continue their studies. If you can make a contribution in her memory, it will truly be appreciated and well-used. Thank you.
