No “Kanaval” or Mardi Gras in Haiti this Tuesday

February 14, 2010

A Haitian tradition which dates back to the era of French Colonisation and has been celebrated every year since the 1800’s, will not take place this Tuesday, in the wake of last month’s devastating earthquake.

After speaking with Pere Bourdeau last night, and reading the Haitian newspapers this morning, it appears that a national decree has cancelled what is usually a nationwide multi-day celebration.

So, as we in the U.S. eat our king cake on Tuesday, lets be sure to keep Haiti and Hinche in your prayers.

Pre-quake Rainy scene in PAP

In other news, the rainy season has arrived a few weeks early. The picture above depicts a pre-quake PAP right after a spring rain. Just imagine what these storms will do to the tent cities in PAP and beyond. After speaking with Father Bourdeau last night, it appears that hundreds continue to arrive each day by truck to Hinche – adding to an already taxed food and water problem.
