Haitian Official to speak in W-Burg Va

February 10, 2010

Just thought I’d post this in case anyone in Central/Tidewater VA is interested in attending or learnining more. I’ll be there and hope to speak with Minister Magloire (whom Pere Bourdeau knows) after the event.

(Williamsburg, VA) – René Magloire, former Minister of Justice of Haiti and Special Advisor to the President and Ministry of Justice of Haiti will discuss the aftermath of the January quake Feb. 15 from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. The talk will be held in room 119 at the William & Mary Law School in Williamsburg, VA. The event – co-sponsored by the Program in Comparative Legal Studies and Post-Conflict Justice, the Black Law Students’ Association and the International Law Society – is free and open to the public.

Magloire will be joined by Louis Aucoin, Institute for Human Security Professor at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and former Special Advisor to the Minister of Justice of Haiti.

The January 12th earthquake that hit the island of Haiti resulted in massive loss of life and the destruction of critical infrastructure. Thousands of detainees and prisoners escaped prisons that crumbled in the earthquake and its aftershocks. A month later, most institutions are still not able to function, and many key government personnel remain unaccounted for. Magloire and Aucoin will discuss what is in store for the country, and what the future holds for the government, courts and institutions of this small nation, which had already been struggling for many years to embed the Rule of Law.
