News from Pere Bourdeau

January 21, 2010

Just got off the phone with Pere Bourdeau. He and Boudou (a better driver than any NASCAR racer, see his picture below) are down in Port au Prince – their second visit since 1/12. The purpose of this trip was for Father Bourdeau to visit his wounded relatives in the hospital and to purchase some food to bring back to Hinche. He says there is a strong U.S. military presence on the streets, which is something he appreciated very much. When I asked about violence, he said he has seen none and described the scene as calmer than last week’s trip.

Back on the home front, schools in Hinche (and for that matter throughout the country), are still closed and may well be shut down for several weeks. Bourdeau plans on visiting Fonkoze bank tomorrow (Fri) or Saturday to withdraw the first check we sent him. His plan for this money is to use it to buy food (at very high black market prices), and then bring this food to the hospital, where he will distribute it among injured and dying patients (some of whom have no family in Hinche).

He has promised to call me when he arrives home this evening. Gas is the only problem, he says the truck is running on very little, high priced, black market diesel. Keep him in your prayers.

That is the best description of Boudou I’ve seen to date! Does the truck still have the little black cutout on the front window? Its impossible to see at night with that, yet they do it anyway. Jim described it as driving with a blindfold on at high speeds!

Yes, the truck still has the tinted windows – you’re right, very hard to see at night. Especially last Friday when we went down to PAP and the less experienced driver – Pere Etienne was behind the wheel instead of Boudou!
